![]() Meroi never fails to impress visitors with its beauty. Many of them, both Greek and foreign, have given us vivid descriptions of its great charm: “The rock of Lycomedes, is an awesome and
romantic sight. On it stands a monastery, inhabited by
monks from Mount Athos, and the town itself, which clings
amphitheatrically on its sides. Olympos, with its ancient
cave of Zeus, gives one the same impression. Extensive
pine woods extend eastwards from the coast, climbing
upwards on a steep rise. Beautiful valleys, filled with
orchards and cypress trees, and interspersed with singing
brooks overhang by red oleanders and covered with vine
plants, meander across this smiling, fertile plateau. The sandy strip of coast stretches for several kilometres northwards and eastwards. A languid sea, the colour of purest blue laps gently against the white sands. Here and there a windmill leisurely churns the air, and all around extends the blue expanse of the Aegean Sea”. |
