![]() The scientific conjecture of the origins of the ponies is that they are descendants of the “Pikermic” small horse, a special breed which lived in Greece some 17 million years ago”. The southern part of Skyros, totally dry at its centre, is girded to the north by a number of springs, which in essence separate it from Meroi, the northern part of the island. The springs are called: Nyphatsi, Phleas, Loutron, Soteras, Dhounia, Ai Mamas and Nyphi. Their waters flow down to lush green fields, (Phleas, Loutron, Soteras, Ai Mamas), and thirsty flocks of sheep and goats go to them from all parts of Vouno to quench their thirst in the summer months. On the eastern side, among rocks which rise sheer from the sea, are the famous sea caves of Diatrypti, Pentekali, Yerania Spilia, as well as many other smaller ones. Their spectacular beauty and variety of colours, reflected from the walls of the caves and the waters, in their depths, make these caves among the most impressive of their kind in Greece. |
