THE ISLAND OF
SKYROS
Its position, nature and geological features.
Skyros is the largest of the four islands which make
up the Northern Sporades group. It lies to the east of
Euboea, its nearest land mass, and only 24 nautical miles
from Kymi, by way of which it communicates with the whole
of Euboea and mainland Greece. It covers an area of 208
square kilometres and has a circumference of 60 miles.
Its mean longitude is 24°30' and its latitude 38°50'.
Its total length measures approximately 15 miles.
The island's formation and geological features are
such that quite possibly in some long-gone era there
existed here two separate islands which are now joined
together by a sandstone causeway some four kilometres
long. It divides Skyros in two almost equal parts, each
completely different from the other both in appearance
and character.
